Orvis Vortex VO2

Average Rating: 9

Retail Price: 525.00

Manufacturer Description
With more fish stopping drag surface than any reel made, the Vortex® VO2 is designed, inside and out, to be the most reliable big-game reel on the market. The VO2’s performance advantages arise from the placement of drag surfaces on the reel’s outside radius, maximizing surface area. The VO2’s huge composite cork-to-Rulon® drag surface is better able to dissipate the heat generated by a hard-running fish than any other drag system. Hot materials expand, changing your drag tension just at that time when you need consistency the most. With the VO2 in hand, your drag setting will remain consistent throughout the battle. And a larger drag surface ensures consistent performance over a wide range of settings, each indexed stop increasing or decreasing drag pressure in predictable increments. When it comes to landing the fish of a lifetime, you can make no better choice than the Vortex VO2.

Pros
Sometimes you find one of those deals that are just too good to pass up. When I found one of these for my 6 wt, at the cost of a Battenkill LA, I thought about it, for a split second. While the capabilities of this reel in a 6wt size are way beyond my real world needs, It has made my 6wt a true beast tamer. It hasn't seen the salt yet but has landed many 20# plus carp and some true giants. Steelhead? The drag is so smooth it has protected light tippets on a very high tip flex 6 wt.(saltwater Orvis Zero G 10.5 flex) on a few occassions when I found myself on a river and stumbled across some unexpected steelhead.

Cons
It isn't light, but it sure has a sweet feel and sound.
