William Joseph Coastal

Average Rating: 8.5

Retail Price: 129.00

Manufacturer Description
The Coastal is the Mac Daddy of fishing packs. The back can carry your hydration bladder, snacks, or a jacket. The tippet control system in the front will hold up to five spools of tippet and there are pockets for everything else, even the big fly boxes! However, the real feature of this pack is its lower center of gravity which distributes the weight over the torso, not on the shoulders. So at the end of the day the only thing that is going to be tired are the fish.

  • Multiple tool holsters
  • Easy access workstations
  • Adjustable suspension
  • Areospace breathable backing
  • Tippet Control System
  • Weighs in at just 2.5 lbs.

Pros
This thing has enough room it to cary every thing you need and a bunch of crap you don't! The hydration bladder is best thing to happen to fly fishing since the fly! The comfort level is top notch, the tippet managment system is the cats a**! Go get one of these!

Cons
Gets a little heavy with the hydration bladder full, but on a hot day the weight disappears fast!

Pros
The Coastal can hold a lot of gear, when you are out on a long days fishing and need to carry, extra reels, flies, food, water and rain protection this will swallow it all up without any problems. The retractable zingers will hold onto the forceps, snips or other things you like to keep hand. The tippet dispenser can make tying a new leader or tippet nice and easy, no searching around in the bottom of the bag for a rogue spool of 6x. And there is a system that will hold your rod whilst you tie on a new fly or change the leader. There are two nice little pockets which detach and offer some protection against the wet. There is a system of adjustable straps to get a comfy fit.

Cons
The very fact it can hold so much gear, also presents a problem. You can end up carry a lot of surplus stuff just to fill it up. The bladder does not fit too comfortably when full and it makes shoving any raingear in the back compartment neigh on impossible. The chest pack is not water proof and you need to bear this in mind when packing stuff and if you do end up going for a sip the two small resistant bags are just that, water resistant not waterproof, although they do hold water well when filled up. None of the zips are saltwater proof and all fur up and corrode after a while no mater how well you rinse them down, making them difficult if not impossible to use. The clips on the adjustable strap system are not very strong and come undone which means you suddenly find one of the chest packs down by your knees, annoying when playing a large fish. Lastly, you will need to adjust you cast when the pack is full of stuff.

On the whole a good system if you can live with it’s shortcomings and need to carry a load of gear.
