Manufacturer Description
Avid sport fishermen will treasure this book—which is nearly as beautiful as the objects it describes. Fly-tying is a highly prized fisherman’s craft, but it’s also an art form, wonderfully captured in this volume’s hundreds of color photos. Each of 100 fly patterns is presented in a two-page spread: an enlarged photo and textual description on the left-hand page, complemented with a set of step-by-step, clearly captioned photos on the facing page. In addition, fishing enthusiasts will find sections on fly-tying tools and materials plus general instructions for getting started. The author, a well-known fly-tier and sport fisherman gives instructions on making traditional trout and salmon flies—all of them fish catchers of proven effectiveness in the United States, Canada, Europe, and Australia. Examples vary in complexity, with patterns to fit every skill level from novice to expert fly-tier. Here are dry flies, nymphs and bugs, wet flies, streamers, and hairwings—a virtually complete selection of traditional and up-to-date examples of the art. The book’s hidden spiral binding keeps its pages opened flat, which makes it ideal for reference at the workbench. More than 600 color photos.

Pros
This is a great little spiral bound book. For the beginner and intermediate tyer, a great source for easy to understand tying instructions for fish catching patterns. It is also a great reference for the advanced tyer, who cant remember all the good fish catching flies. It covers tying from the start, tools and materials. It has a species index at the back and also each fly has a chart for which species the fly is intended for. 100 trout and salmon flies, dry, wet, nymphs and bugs, streamers, and hairwings. Each fly has a degree of difficulty, that is explained in the back and on a scale of 1 to 5. There is also a suppliers list in the back of the book. There is also a brief write up about each fly, when and how to fish and who came up with the pattern. A great resource to have on hand for $24.95 US, $34.95 Can

Cons
The patterns are not listed as what we are used to rather a picture of the fly and the materials all around with arrows pointing to them. It is easy to understand though because there is good step by step photos of each fly.

Pros
I purchased through Lee Valley Tools, and saved a couple of bucks. A great resource for a new tyer. Everything is laid out with just enough pics. to tie the fly. The spiral binding makes it easy to have the book stay on page while tying. Also it covers all the necessary flies.

Cons
Some alternate materials could be listed and colour variations for the newer tyers.

Pros
I will just ditto what the first three reviews have said. It's a perfect first book for the new fly tier and at the same time I would not want to be without it in my now extensive tying library. It has a very easy to understand layout with great photos. It would also be good for anyone who is trying to teach others to fly tie as it lays out tying sequence well.

Cons
Don't loan it out...you might not get it back.

Pros
This is a great book for beginners. The pictorials gives step by step instructions on tying populars flies. I'm from Singapore and there are no trouts or salmons in the tropics. But yet I have found flies that will work on our local water.
