Return to Fly Tying Vises

Regal Vise

Average Rating: 8.3

Retail Price: 150.00

Manufacturer Description
For over 20 years now, the Regal name has become known throughout the fly tying community as the source for the best tying vises on the planet.

The object was to build a vise with superior hook-holding power, as few moving parts as possible, and design it with the fly tier in mind. Once these three basic requirements were fulfilled we knew we had something special.

As a matter of fact, the basic design was special enough to obtain a U.S. patent. More importantly, the design was accepted by fly tiers worldwide as a valuable tool that has become a staple in their fly tying endeavours.

Pros
For the tyer who doesn't need a true rotary vise and doesn't tie large saltwater flies this vise is hard to beat. The hook holding power is exceptional, and the simple design means you can tie a dry then a streamer with absolutely no adjustments, perfect for the tyer who likes variety in each tying session. The vise is simple and straight forward it does only one thing hold the hook, and does it very well. I use my father's Regal vise as my travel vise, it is at least 25 years old and performs as well today as it did the day it was made.

Cons
The range of the hooks it will hold leaves something to be desired for big flies anything over 1/0 could slip. The strength of the jaws also can potentially damage hooks, I have had more than a few break at the point where the jaws held them, that works out to be fewer than 20 hooks out of several thousand.

Pros
I got a pedestal base for this one. I have always used the clamp. I do not know what other vices bases are like but this one is good and heavy. The ease of use of this vise is almost scary. Its to easy, open the jaws, put hook in close, forget. Sure you might have to put bigger hooks into the slot for them but the bar at the back of the jaws makes it to easy as well. Open the jaw push the hook back to the bar and close. Once in that grove properly it wont move. I really like this vice, for the main reason I can count on it to preform beyond the call of duty. I figure this will be my travel vice as it is dependable and to easy to use

Cons
There are draw backs, it is a rotational vice but not a true one, it can be adjusted with a knob on the underside of the head. I try to keep that screw fairly tight but also allow the head to turn. I have found this knob to slip occasionally as on the end of the screw is plastic and it wears. I got a Bronze Medallion, pedestal and paid a bit more than the list price here. I do not like the bobbin cradle as it is a bit awkward, and is always in the way when I move the vice around my desk. I know I can remove it but I'm just to stubborn. I am not sure and am unaware of a material clip for this vice. I know I can make one but get by with out it.

Pros
If you tie commercially, specifically dries, nymphs, woolies, etc. and do not need a rotary feature, this is an excellent choice. If you want something you can tie flies balls to the walls with no adjustments, this is your vise.

Cons
Has a tendency to break some saltwater hooks when using the hook slots.

Pros
I absolutly love the cam release and it's symplicity. It allows for very quick, not fuss, in and out of hooks. For the most part it holds hooks very well with no adjustments needed.

Cons
If the hook is too big or not set in carefully, you have a projectile flying though the room or a broken hook. Some folks will tell you that you can use this vise to debarb your hooks. Don't do it.

Pros
Vice does hold hooks in the size 14 and larger sizes.

Cons
When tying tails on size 18 or smaller flies -- the hooks have a tendency to fly out of the vice. Unfortunately, when this happens the tips of the jaws start to crack and chip off.

In addition, why should I have to be "conscious" of how I place a hook in the vice.

Not what I would expect for a $150.00 vice. Better off with a Renzetti Traveler in my opinion.

Pros
Great product. The small head will hold all small hooks. With the large head I have tyed 7/0 hooks. It may not be a true rotary vise but I've tyed many tube flies on this vise. Regal's warranty is second to none. without question.

Pros
This is an awsome vice when you are a new to tying. Low cost and that's usefull because you need all your money for other important stuff.

Cons
it's only good for simple flies, like the one you ty in the first winter to be ready for the warmer spring afternoons. For bigger and saltwater flies you better start with a true rotary vise which can hold also 1/0 hooks

Pros
Good middle priced vise for average tying needs. Easy to rotate, very sturdy, stable pedestal, wears well.

Cons
After volume tying, squeezing handle makes my wrist sore . Put non-skid material on pedestal base.

Pros
Love it. But I hate adjusting the cam-vices. I bought the base and midge jaws and have only broken a couple of dai-riki natural bends when using the groove. Avoiding the groove, avoids the problem.

Pros
Great for production fly tying. Use with base and clamp without a problem. Has held every hook I have placed in it from 20 to 2/0 without a problem. You can try to flick the hook out and it will just play a lovely tune.

Remember that a vise's job is to hold the hook and no other vise does it better.

Cons
Rotary would be nice, but if you'll tie faster without rotary.

Your Renzetti and Dyna King friends will look down their noses at you saying that they have a superior vise.

Think of the materials and accessories you can buy with the $ you've saved.
