Renzetti Traveler Cam Series Vise

Average Rating: 7.1

Retail Price: 129.95

Manufacturer Description
In addition to all the great features of our standard traveler vises, this latest series features a new set of cam operated jaws. The system is lever actuated with infinitely adjustable jaws. Minimal pressure on the lever holds the hook rock steady. Your tying sequence is never compromised by unwanted hook movement. Pedestal base comes with pockets. Cam Traveler Vises must be ordered for right or left handed tier. The Traveler jaws and the Saltwater Traveler jaws are not interchangeable, however you can order a Renzetti Traveler Bent Shaft (specify right or left) and a Cam Saltwater Traveler set of jaws. This will require disassembling your vise each time you wish to switch jaws. The cost of this is approx. $107.00 . Please call us if you need to do this. A Saltwater Cam Traveler Vise Head will accomplish the same with out any assembling required.

Pros
I have one of these for a backup vise and for my travelling kit. I am not fond of this vise, but it was a gift and I do use it. I am not happy with the locking mechanism as you are constantly having to mess with it to keep it tight. I am used to a little more performance from my vise and should be happy with what this is, an inexpensive travel vise.

Pros
quality materials for the most part.Great dry fly vise.

Cons
Base was to small and light for My tying needs and the shaft was to short when using a scrap bag.
Replaced the rubber washer on the jaws 3 times with in a year.

Pros
Clamp is excelent, it will hold any hook I tie without much adjustment which makes it easy to go from 2/0 saltwater hooks to 14 drys in only a few seconds. This vice is extremely simple to use and to adjust to using. I have had no mechanical problems with this vice in the nearly year that I have had it.

Cons
The base is not the most stable that I have ever used. The shaft tends to come loose from the head, easy fix with some loctight.

Pros
I use mine in my travel kit, because it is light. It is less costly than others so there two issues give it a heads up.

Cons
I fine that if you try to make any kind of adjustment you will create more work the next time as it never seems to be remain adjusted right.

Pros
I have the clamp model and it's fairly stable. It works well with smaller hooks from 12 to 28.

Cons
It doesn't hold streamer size hooks very well. Also, I find I'm regularly tightening the clamp to keep it from turning when I put some pressure on the hook.

Pros
Great value (bang for the buck)and relatively reasonably priced
Cam lever simple to operate
Light
Rotary (duh!)

Cons
As others have noted with the non-cam head, the stem is way too short on the pedestal model.
I seem to be frequently tightening the set screw that holds the shaft in to the base.

Pros
Solid lock on the hook from tiny dries to large salmon flies. Hooks are still tight after sitting for days. No problem loseing tension as you might expect from rubber. After a couple years, still haven't had to fuss with changeing the o-rings.

Cons
Could do without the bushing on the shaft of the clamp model, or at least make it adjustable for more height flexibility. Handle on rotary loosens easily if you bump it or forget to loosen the lock knob.

Pros
great for an experienced tier, and beginner as well. for the price not a bad vise, and it is great as a streamside vise.

Cons
takes getting used to asjusting the drag. Jaws become loose after tying for awhile. base can sometimes be unsteady if you dont have a stable area to set it on.

Pros
Easy to use. Good materials and workmanship.

Cons
I agree with most of the posts complaining about the centre shaft not tall enough, and the base is a little light.

Pros
The traveller cam is the best value for a rotary vise in this price range. To find a rotary vise of this quality you will have to spend a bunch more money.

I don't agree about the stem being too short. I find it just right. Any longer and I'd have to reach farther to pick up tools and materials from my tying desk. The only advice I can offer to those who think the stem is too short is to shorten up on the amount of thread outside the bobbin.

Cons
I do agree that the base could be a bit heavier. On the other hand this is a portable vise and a heavy base would defeat the purpose wouldn't it?

Pros
My traveling vise; size and weight are fine for that use.

Cons
A bit light, both in terms of weight and build quality, for me.

Pros
Great marketing. Holds hooks okay.

Sold mine after a few months use.

Cons
1. Stem is way too short, so plan on buying the longer one.
2. Base too light.
3. Head will come loose from stem (as someone mentioned, use some Loc-Tite on it).
4. Rotary handle loosens, which then requires readjusting.
5. Not worth the current selling price of $175.

Pros
Reading some of these other reviews makes it seem to me that I have a different vise than some reviewers. I have had no issues with this vise. The jaws secure hooks VERY well in the sizes I've tied (24 to 2/0). The shaft is shorter than the other vises I've looked at, but this is a travel vise. The short shaft is a feature not an oversight, and I have found no trouble tying with it. (A longer replacement shaft is available.) Likewise, the pedestal base is sufficiently heavy that I cannot imagine tipping the vise while tying. The vise sits like a rock, and again, as a traveling vise the pedestal weight is a feature not an oversight. (It is still pretty darn heavy, and by far the heaviest thing in my travel gear bag.)

I bought my vise used (I have no idea how old it is), and in the two and a half years I've had it I've not needed to replace the O-ring on the jaw, or any other piece for that matter. Perhaps I tie too little? I'd estimate I've tied a few hundred hours on this vise. For some that might be a few months worth of tying, for me it is a few years.

Cons
Hard pressed to come up with something here. I guess I'd say that the current retail makes it tough to pass on the Peak or Danvise at lower prices, but this vise is a more compact design for travel which can come in handy. I picked up mine used for a great price, so this is not a con that actually affected me.
